Utilizing proprietary electrical and mechanical PCB design topologies, Murata has introduced a new series of compact DC/DC converters that address the proliferation of wide-bandgap technology. The new MGN1 series of 1W output DC/DC converters is designed to deliver the voltages required by the gate drivers of GaN devices.
These units offer low-profile, small-footprint, surface-mount solutions that can be easily integrated into systems with limited space. They also have the advantage of being lightweight, which opens up even greater potential for use. The offered output voltages are +8V, +12V and +6/-3V.
One of the most important features of the MGN1 series DC/DC converters is their extremely low isolation capacitance of 2.5 pF (typical). This minimizes the coupling of transients across the isolation barrier, preventing signal distortion. In addition, it means system EMI issues can be mitigated. The common mode transient immunity (CMTI) of >200 kV/µs of these devices makes them well suited for the increased switching speeds of GaN-based systems, further ensuring gate drive signal integrity. Reliable operation under high voltage conditions is maintained thanks to their partial discharge performance.
Murata MGN1 Series DC-DC Converters support 1.1kV continuous isolation barrier withstand voltage, pending UL62368 compliance for 650VDC basic isolation and 240VAC reinforced isolation. These converters have creepage and clearance distances of 6.5 mm. A working temperature range of -40 °C to +105 °C enables installation in extremely demanding environments. In addition, reverse polarity and short-circuit protection mechanisms are integrated.
There are a variety of GaN-based applications for which the new DC-DC converters can be used. These include EV fast charging infrastructure, battery storage converters, smart grid implementations, solar inverters, solid state switches, ICT and data centers, wind turbines and motor drives.
