Louisiana State Police are investigating a shooting in Rapides Parish involving a deputy

Alexandria – The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Sheriff’s investigation into the November 6, 2022 shooting that occurred is still active and ongoing. A Critical Incident Briefing Video (CIBV) was produced and includes a body worn camera, a dashboard camera and footage from bystanders. Only facts are given in the CIBV and some of the recordings have been redacted in order to grant the persons involved their right to privacy or to protect witnesses and/or victims. Updated 11/07/22 – Alexandria– On Sunday, November 6, 2022, at approximately 2:15 p.m., detectives from the Louisiana State Police Investigative Bureau were asked by the Rapides Community Sheriff’s Office (RPSO) to investigate a shooting involving a deputy. The shooting incident involved an RPSO deputy and resulted in the death of 45-year-old Derrick J. Kittling of Alexandria.

The preliminary investigation found that an RPSO deputy carried out a traffic stop on April 7 around 1:30 p.m. yesterday afternoonth Street near Broadway Avenue in Alexandria. A physical altercation ensued between the deputy and Kittling during the traffic stop, during which Kittling gained control of the deputy’s taser. As the physical combat ensued, the deputy discharged his service pistol, hitting Kittling. Kittling was taken to a local hospital for treatment but eventually succumbed to his injuries.

The Louisiana State Police are the lead investigative agency in this shooting, which involved a proxy. The crime scene was processed by technicians from the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory with the assistance of investigators from the Alexandria Criminal Investigation Department.

The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released in coordination with the Rapides County Attorney’s Office in due course. As the investigation progresses, coordination and partnership between law enforcement and the Alexandria community is essential to gain a thorough and complete understanding of the events leading up to the shooting incident.

06.11.2022 Alexandria- At the request of the Rapides Township Sheriff’s Office, police officers are investigating a shooting involving a deputy on the 7th Street area off Broadway Avenue within the Alexandria city limits.
