What they ask of Christmas shoppers

The upcoming holiday shopping season is critical for small businesses on New Jersey’s Main Street, as many of them rely on strong sales this time of year to generate year-round profits.

But this year there is a problem.

“Small businesses across New Jersey continue to struggle, especially with labor shortages, to keep their businesses alive and serve their customers,” said Eileen Kean, director of the New Jersey Chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business.

Many businesses affected

She pointed out that “this extends to so many areas, whether it’s your local restaurant, your local brewery, your florist, or your Main Street boutiques.”

She noted that supply chain disruptions are also an ongoing problem in some industries and “there is no easy fix ahead.”

Kean said the result is an added workload for small business owners and the workers who have them.

Long hours, no days off

“They have to work far, far longer hours than they ever thought necessary, so it’s really in the spirit of the true small business owner to really put in those hours to meet the demand,” she said.

She emphasized as you do your holiday shopping this month and next, “we hope all of our fellow New Jerseyers can see that it takes real patience and compassion to simply understand what businesses are going through.

She said even if service in a shop or restaurant is a little longer than normal, don’t be angry, take a breath and “give everyone a smile because this is the time of forgiveness, kindness and togetherness. ”
